Building Capacity And Competency Through Partners

Social media and networking tools are exciting and useful communication channels, and they take time to understand and execute – a resource few of us have in surplus.  So, we decided to accelerate time to market through two incredible support teams that know a lot more about social media than we’ll ever have time to learn.

In other words, we did what we advise our clients to do:  Partner to build capacity and/or competency to scale your businesses.  Here’s a little bit about both:

Building Capacity

Capacity equates to “arms and legs.”  Companies in need of capacity have the expertise (competency), but their sales and support teams are tapped out on being able to take on more territory or accounts productively.

Tap into partners for capacity to:
o Get into markets where you lack presence.  Look at your market coverage.  Identify and prioritize new markets.  This could be geographic, like West Coast presence, or vertical, like health care.
o Get more from your sales resources.  Your direct sales force can only do so much.  Can you get more from a channel account manager that works through a partner’s sales force?

When to build capacity is tricky, in that it is not an “on/off” switch.  Anticipate when you might need to expand your reach through partners at least six month’s in advance (product/service dependent) to build in the proper amount of partner readiness and enablement time.

Building Competency

Competency equates to skills and experience.  Companies in need of competency have the resources to perform (capacity), but their sales and support teams lack the know-how to deliver on expanding customer requirements or market trends.

Tap into partners for competency to deliver a solution element not core to your expertise and is too costly to develop or deliver organically.

Like building capacity, partnering for competency takes time.  Again, plan on at least a six-month lead-time for partners to understand your technology, especially if time is required to develop and test software applications.

Building capacity and competency through partners is a natural outcome of growth, and a desire to scale your business cost effectively.
When was the last time you took a step back to analyze and anticipate how business partners can help you grow?
